What is Thread, and why is it important to Matter and the smart home?
Thread is a wireless protocol specifically built for IoT devices. It’s designed to make them work faster, have fewer points of failure, use less power, and communicate with each other more seamlessly.
A low-power, low-bandwidth mesh networking protocol that uses the 802.15.4 radio technology, Thread is similar to existing smart home protocols Zigbee and Z-Wave. But unlike them, it doesn’t need a central hub or bridge. Instead, Thread devices can talk directly to each other. By cutting out the middle man, Thread can be faster, especially over large networks.
One of benefits of using Thread devices is that you will have fewer devices using your WIFI network. Also, if one device in your Thread network fails, another device will step up and fill in the roles of the failed device. This is the self-healing feature of Thread.

Intuitive to set up and use
These plugs are compact, so they don’t hog outlet space, and setup was quick thanks to Matter compatibility. I like that they work smoothly with Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home, which makes them flexible no matter what system you prefer. The response time is fast—turning devices on and off happens almost instantly, and the connection has been stable with no random dropouts so far.The design feels sturdy, and handling up to 15A/1800W gives peace of mind when using them with higher-powered appliances like coffee makers. I do think the app interface could be a bit more polished—it works, but it isn’t the most intuitive when managing multiple plugs. Still, once things are set up, you don’t really need to spend much time in the app since voice control and automations do most of the work.For the price of a 4-pack, the value is pretty good. If you’re looking for a Matter-over-Thread plug to replace your older Wi-Fi devices (especially given Wemo’s looming unsupported status), this is an excellent choice, even with a minor hiccup along the way.Blazing Fast ResponsivenessThanks to Matter over Thread, the response time is almost instantaneous. Tapping the switch in the Apple Home app results in an immediate power toggle. My old Wi-Fi plugs often had a noticeable delay or would show “No Response”—I haven’t had that issue with the S4. The Thread mesh network is incredibly fast and reliable.Setup – Mostly a BreezeInitial setup with the Matter QR code was quick and painless for most of the plugs. I was really hesitant about buying this given previous reviews of Onvis devices. I needed a smart plug but really wanted it to be Thread over matter. I have lots of Eve products that use Thread and this device slipped right into the mesh. Setup was easy and I haven’t had ANY problems to date (it has been a couple of weeks now).

This is not a Routing End Device. Just an End Device.That is, it will not help expand your Thread mesh network.Good enough for the price, but it would have been nice to know about this before buying…

Fought with it for 6 hours. 1 of them connected but was uncontrollable. Internet suggested a firmware update, but it was already at the latest. Connection attempted into both HomeKit and Home Assistant.
